Get indexed, get ranked, get traffic

There is no doubt that website traffic is critical to your business success. And the best kind of traffic is free traffic. Where does free traffic come from? Google and other search engines.

How does Google give out free traffic?

The process works in a way that you have experienced many many times. You load up Google or another search engine. Enter the words you’re interested in. And then you visit one or more of the sites that show up. That website owner has just enjoyed the benefit of free traffic. So the real question is how you get that free traffic.

If you’re like most people you only click links on the first page or two. In fact, the first page of results receives almost all the free traffic. And believe it or not, the first 3 results receive over 70% of the traffic.

So, obviously your site needs to be in the first page of results to get free traffic from Google. And this means Google needs to “rank” you as a top 10 result. And this bring us to…

What is search engine optimization?

Search Engine Optimization is a measure of how well Google and other search engines think your website matches the search terms people are typing into their search boxes. It’s a complex formula that only people working for Google know exactly. However, we do know a few things that count.

Getting indexed

First, before you can get ranked highly, Google has to know you exist. This is known as being “indexed.” When your website gets indexed, Google stores information about it in their massive database.

Google needs to actually find your site in order to index it. And the best way for Google to find you is to get inbound links from other sites. Because Google already knows about these sites, it will follow the new links to you.

Twitter and Facebook updates are great places to put links to your site. Google visits these sites many times every day. And follows new links it finds immediately.

Gaining ranking

After getting indexed, you need to work on your search engine ranking. Due to the massive size of the Google database – literally billions of pages – just getting indexed doesn’t do much for you.

The 3 factors in getting ranked:

  • Content
  • Links
  • Activity

Content strategies

This is also called on-page SEO. You need to make sure your content matches the search terms you’re going after. The topic of this article is clearly SEO. One way Google figures this out is from the fact that it contains the term SEO. And another way this is determined is by the other related phrases like traffic generation that are also in the article.

In addition to the content on the page, other things to keep in mind are the title tags on the page, and the domain name itself. Google uses all of this content to figure out what your site is really about.

Link juice

The next thing to consider is your links. The links coming in and the links going out are included in this. It’s very important that you have more links coming in than you have going out. The more inbound links you have the better your ranking will be.

Article spinning is a super easy way to get a bunch of inbound links. To accomplish this you start by writing an article that targets the keywords you’re after. Then create a bunch of different versions of it. And post unique versions to lots of websites that accept articles. And quantity is the key here – so do lots and lots.

Make your site active

And lastly, it’s seems clear that Google expects important pages to be actively updated. A page that was created 3 years ago and hasn’t been touched since won’t rank well. Regular content updates to your site are expected. You can do this with RSS feeds and news posts.

But the best way is with active discussions on your page itself. So, obviously, you need to get people to visit your site on your own, too. Online forums are simple source of real live visitors.

What you need to do is sign up with several forums in your niche. Visit often and make posts. Always include a link back to your site. This will get your more inbound links. And it will also get real visitors to your site.

Conclusion

All of the above is important. But let’s face it, writing multiple versions of the same article. Creating profiles on a ton of forums. And posting your articles and comments takes a lot of time. Which means you probably won’t end up doing it.

The good news is that there are automated software programs out there that will do this for you. So the best thing you can do is to automate this process. This way you’ll actually do it. And not doing it means you will never get free traffic from Google.
